Dr. Steven Katz

Class of 2013

I attended a science career fair at ASU in my third year and spoke to Jody Durham, an admissions representative at the Sonoran booth. As Jody explained what naturopathic medicine was, I knew it was what I wanted to do, and that Sonoran would be the perfect fit for me.

I participated in many activities while I attended Sonoran. I was the Student Government Association (SGA) president in 2011 and I served as a student ambassador in 2012. I enjoyed getting involved with the school and I loved my experiences there. It was easy to contact faculty if I ever needed help and I learned a great deal from the instructors. At graduation, I felt prepared to enter the real world as a doctor.

It was a huge change to switch from pharmacy to naturopathic medicine. I believe prescriptions are overused and it keeps the individual taking the medications from the healing process. For example, if a patient has anxiety, the patient will be prescribed an anti-anxiety medication. As a naturopathic physician, I work with the basic biochemistry of the body to train it to heal itself. Our treatment aims to re-balance the body’s biochemistry to restore proper function.

I spent two years of my clinic experience at Sonoran on addiction treatment rotations, which allowed me to learn how to start retooling the brain. With brain restoration, the brain can be retrained on how to function after having damage from pharmaceuticals, drugs and/or alcohol.

Another passion of mine is pain management. While I was interning with Dr. Michael Cronin at his practice in Scottsdale, I learned about prolotherapy and platelet-rich plasma therapy. These therapies have been very successful for patients and it has kept many from having surgeries. After graduating, I joined Drs. Michael and Kyle Cronin’s practice, and I am very grateful to be a part of this wonderful team.

My favorite part of being a naturopathic physician is the reaction on patients’ faces when they recover from pain and problems they have experienced for decades. I actually look forward to working each and every day. I have helped treat and improve conditions such as chronic pain, bacterial/viral infections, autoimmune diseases, GI problems, cardiovascular disease and cancers.
