Massachusetts Law Licenses Naturopathic Medicine

Massachusetts State House

On January 11, 2017, Governor Charlie Baker signed into law a bill that will officially license naturopathic medicine in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.  In the near future patients will be able to visit licensed naturopathic doctors for their healthcare needs. The law will also reserve the titles Naturopathic Doctor and N.D. for those who have completed four-year, post-graduate programs at institutions such as SCNM that are recognized by the United States Department of Education. This is a major victory for patients in Massachusetts seeking natural treatment from a qualified professional, as well as doctors and students in the field.

Naturopathic medicine has received a significant amount of support and interest in Massachusetts so we are thrilled at SCNM to see that patients there will have the option of natural healing. Both the study and use of naturopathic medicine have been exploding in recent years, so this recognition in Massachusetts is a great step towards licensure in other states. With the addition of Massachusetts, naturopathic medicine is now licensed and regulated in 19 states as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and 5 provinces in Canada. We are confident that more states will be passing similar laws in coming years to make the healing power of naturopathic medicine accessible nationwide.
