Each year we invite incoming students to engage in a little summer reading in preparation for their first year of naturopathic medical school. This year’s book, Nate Silver’s Signal and the Noise, may seem like an unlikely choice, but we hope you have started to find that its concepts are not only relevant but in fact about medicine.
The central theme of Mr. Silver's work is predictive modeling, an analysis he illustrates in chapters on hurricanes, baseball, Las Vegas gambling, the Great Recession and medicine. In fact the Signal and the Noise includes one of the best explanations of Bayes Theorem, a critical approach to clinical diagnosis that incorporates diagnostic testing (lab work, mammograms and other imaging studies).
Please join us for a webinar hosted by Pamela Howell, MD about Bayesian Logic as presented in Signal and the Noise. Dr. Howell, a pediatrician by training, teaches General Medicine, a course on clinical diagnosis, problem solving and patient care, a class that you’ll take in your second year. We hope this discussion will start to get you thinking like a medical student and future doctor.

SCNM has made some exciting curriculum changes that will enhance your learning experience. As the first naturopathic medical school to reinvent the curriculum in more than 30 years, it should come as no surprise that we are the first to revise it again. Over the past four years, we reviewed course evaluations, measured student stress, sought feedback from faculty, and just plain listened to students. For the past 13 months a faculty-led task force met to explore ways to improve students’ learning experiences and decrease stress. Watch this webinar to learn about these changes effective Fall 2014.
